Amman – The foreign ministers of Jordan, Egypt and Iraq warned on Tuesday evening that Israel is pushing the region into a “comprehensive war” and called for an end to the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Ati, and Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met in New York on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, according to a joint statement published by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry.
The three ministers discussed “the course of action within the framework of the tripartite cooperation mechanism in preparation for the upcoming tripartite summit at the leaders’ level in Cairo,” according to the statement, without specifying a date for its convening.
The alliance between Jordan, Iraq and Egypt is called the “New Levant,” and talk about it began after several summits were held between the three countries.
The ministers also discussed the “dangerous escalation taking place in the region”, and stressed that “stopping this escalation begins with stopping the Israeli aggression on Gaza.”
They condemned the “Israeli aggression on Lebanon,” and warned that “Israel is pushing the region into a comprehensive war.”
The ministers called on the international community and the Security Council to “assume their relevant responsibilities to stop the war.”
They stressed that “Israel bears full responsibility for this deterioration, which will have serious consequences for the entire region.”
Since Monday morning, the Israeli army has launched the “most violent and extensive” attack since the beginning of the confrontations with the Lebanese factions movement about a year ago; resulting in 564 deaths, including 50 children and 94 women, in addition to 1,835 wounded, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
In contrast, air raid sirens continue to sound in Israel, after Lebanese factions launched hundreds of rockets at military sites, settlements, and the Mossad headquarters in Tel Aviv, amid a strict blackout on human and material losses, according to observers.
Israel, with American support, has been waging a war on the Gaza Strip since October 7, leaving more than 137,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amidst massive destruction and deadly famine.
Israel has been occupying Arab lands in Palestine, Syria and Lebanon for decades.
