Amman – Jordan and Egypt confirmed, on Monday, that reaching an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip represents the first step towards reducing the dangerous escalation witnessed in the region, which could lead to a regional war.
This came during telephone talks between Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdel Ati, according to a statement by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, a copy of which was received by Anadolu Agency.
The two ministers stressed, according to the statement, that “stopping the Israeli aggression on Gaza is a priority that all efforts must be combined to implement.”
They stressed that “reaching an immediate ceasefire in Gaza is the first step towards reducing the dangerous escalation in the region, which could lead to a regional war.”
Safadi stressed Jordan’s support for “the efforts led by Egypt, Qatar and the United States to reach a swap deal that guarantees a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and allows for the entry of sufficient humanitarian and medical aid without restrictions to all parts of the Strip.”
The two ministers also discussed the dangerous Israeli escalation in the occupied West Bank, and warned of “the danger of continued Israeli violations of holy sites in Jerusalem.”
They stressed the “necessity of respecting the legal and historical status quo in the holy sites, and the fact that Al-Aqsa Mosque, with its entire area of 144 dunams, is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims.”
The two ministers stressed that “the Jerusalem Endowments and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Administration, affiliated with the Jordanian Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs and Holy Places, is the legal entity with exclusive jurisdiction to manage all the affairs of the Holy Sanctuary and regulate entry to it.”
They condemned in the “strongest terms” the extremist statements of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, regarding the establishment of a Jewish synagogue in Al-Aqsa Mosque.
They considered these statements a “violation of international law and an unacceptable incitement that requires a clear international position to condemn and confront it.”
The two ministers expressed their country’s “absolute rejection of these extremist policies that seek to change the historical and legal status of Jerusalem and its holy sites through a policy of imposing a fait accompli.”
Earlier on Monday, Ben-Gvir said in press statements that he intends to build a synagogue at Al-Aqsa Mosque, claiming that Israeli law “equalizes the rights of Muslims and Jews to hold prayers” there.
During their discussions, Safadi and Abdel Aati stressed that “Jordan and Egypt stand by Lebanon and its security, stability and sovereignty.”
They stressed the “need to adhere to UN Security Council Resolution 1701.”
On August 11, 2006, the Security Council adopted Resolution 1701, which called for a complete cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel, and the creation of a zone free of weapons and militants between the Blue Line (the dividing line between Lebanon and Israel) and the Litani River in southern Lebanon, except for those belonging to the Lebanese Army and the UNIFIL forces.
The Jordanian and Egyptian foreign ministers stressed the “necessity for the international community and its institutions, especially the Security Council, to take action to stop the Israeli aggression on Gaza and implement the two-state solution in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.”
With American support, Israel wages a devastating war on Gaza, leaving nearly 134,000 dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amidst massive destruction and deadly famine.
In contempt of the international community, Israel continues this war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution to stop it immediately, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and to improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
