Jordan Dumais Dominates in QMJHL Return: Halifax Mooseheads Triumph 6-4

2023-10-21 03:08:42

Jordan Dumais was back in the QMJHL for his first game of the season and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies learned it the hard way.

Submitted by the Columbus Blue Jackets at the start of the day, Dumais collected three goals and two assists in his first outing of the season to help the Halifax Mooseheads triumph by a score of 6-4 on Friday night.

Returning from an upper-body injury, Dumais contributed to five of Halifax’s six goals in the victory. This is already the ninth time in his QMJHL career that he has collected five or more points in a game. His third goal was the winning goal.

The only goal in which he did not participate was that of his goalkeeper Mathis Rousseau at the end of the match. Rousseau recovered the puck with a little over three minutes remaining in the third period at the mouth of the net, without pressure, and he immediately cleared the puck into the back of the net at the other end of the ice.

Besides Dumais and Rousseau, the Mooseheads’ goals were the works of Markus Vidicek and Reece Peitzsche. Vidicek finished the game with three points, while Jake Furlong and Brady Schultz each had two assists.

Dumais wasted no time in making his presence felt. After only 10:48 of play, the 19-year-old forward took his own throw return in the slot to deceive the vigilance of Kyle Hagen and open his counter.

The Huskies, however, took advantage of a numerical advantage a few minutes later to respond. Louis-Philippe Fontaine took advantage of the heavy traffic in front of the net to take a shot from the blue line and tie the game 1-1.

Back from the locker room for the middle period, Dumais continued his excellent debut. After just 32 seconds of play, Dumais took advantage of a power play to spot Markus Vidicek with a cross-ice pass. Vidicek gave the Mooseheads the lead once more with an excellent wrist shot into the top of the net.

As they did in the opening period, the Huskies quickly found the back of the net to tie the game. Less than a minute following Vidicek’s goal, Antonin Verreault jumped on a rebound and his fifth goal of the season made it 2-2.

The Dumais show continued for the rest of the middle period. Midway through the period, Dumais positioned himself at the mouth of the net and accepted a pass from Jake Furlong to score his second of the game, thanks to a one-timer.

Dumais added more before the end of the second period when he made a breakthrough towards the net, before putting it back for Reece Peitzsche who completed by redirecting the puck into the back of the cage to make it 4-2.

Dumais completed his hat trick with less than five minutes remaining in the third period with an excellent wrist shot that he took from the faceoff circle.

Jérémy Langlois and Thomas Verdon also scored late in the game for the Huskies in the losing cause.

In addition to scoring a goal, Rousseau did well in front of the Mooseheads net with 37 saves.

Hat trick from Blais and late double from Béland for the Océanic

Alexandre Blais scored a hat trick, Julien Béland broke a 4-4 tie in the third period and the Rimouski Océanic had the upper hand 6-4 over the Quebec Remparts.

Béland added a second goal by scoring into an empty net in the final minute.

Ben Cross was the other scorer for the Océanic and Dominic Pilote collected three assists: on Blais’ first two goals and on Béland’s winning goal.

For the Remparts, Charles Savoie had a goal and two assists, Antoine Dorion and Daniel Agostino had a goal and an assist and Vsevolod Komarov scored.

The two teams exchanged a goal at the start of the match and the Océanic followed up with three unanswered goals. The Remparts in turn scored three goals in a row to bring the score to 4-4 before Béland broke the deadlock with 7:25 remaining in the third.

An offensive festival for the Drakkar

The Shawinigan Cataractes had no response to the powerful attack of the Drakkar and Baie-Comeau signed an 8-4 victory.

Four Drakkar players finished the match with at least three points. Justin Gill was the most productive with a goal and three assists, while Justin Poirier had two goals and an assist.

The Drakkar built a three-goal lead in the first period, before adding two goals in the second period and three more goals in the final period.

Anthony Lavoie, Niks Fenenko, Isaac Dufort and Shawn Pearson also scored in Baie-Comeau’s triumph.

In front of the Drakkar cage, Philippe Bourdage was not very busy with only 19 shots directed towards him. He lost four times, once morest Lou-Félix Denis, Jordan Tourigny, Cole Chandler and Kody Dupuis.

Rémi Delafontaine and Félix Hamel shared the work in front of the Cataractes net. Delafontaine allowed three goals and Hamel allowed five.

This is a fourth defeat in 11 games this season for the Cataractes, who still maintain the lead in the West. The Drakkar also holds first place in the East.

The Armada takes on the Voltigeurs

Thanks to three goals in a row to start the match, the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada scored a 4-2 victory once morest the Drummondville Voltigeurs.

The Voltigeurs are going through difficult times with five defeats in their last six games.

Blainville-Boisbriand built a three-goal lead following 40 minutes of play thanks to Matthew MacDonald and James Swan scoring twice. MacDonald also finished the game with three points.

The Voltigeurs, however, rolled up their sleeves and scored two goals in the space of 40 seconds in the third period to get back into the game. Maveric Lamoureux first scored his fourth goal of the season, then Sam Olivier made it 3-2 a few moments later.

Fortunately for the Armada, Alexis Bourque hit the target to give Blainville-Boisbriand a two-goal priority and their lead held until the end of the match.

Charles-Édward Gravel did well in front of the Armada net with a 34 save performance. In the Voltigeurs camp, Riley Mercer rejected 21 of the 25 shots aimed at him.

The Foreurs blanked by the Eagles

Nicolas Ruccia stopped all 27 shots aimed at him and the Cape Breton Eagles recorded a 2-0 victory once morest the Val-d’Or Foreurs.

Cam MacDonald and Antoine Roy scored the two goals of the match to allow the Eagles to have the best of the Foreurs for a second time in less than a week. Last Sunday, Cape Breton triumphed by a score of 4-3.

In addition to scoring, MacDonald had an assist on Roy’s goal to end the game with two points.

After winning their first four games of the campaign, the Foreurs find themselves in the middle of a sluggish period during which they have won only one of their last six games.

Foreurs goalie Mathis Lussier gave up twice on 21 shots.

A rare victory for the Olympics

Charles Boutin opened the scoring in addition to adding two assists and Nathan Lévesque scored twice to allow the Gatineau Olympics to win 5-2 at the expense of the Sherbrooke Phoenix.

Before this meeting, the Olympics had only two victories in 12 games. Despite their victory, Gatineau still finds itself in last place in the Western Conference in the QMJHL.

Jérémie Minville also stood out with two assists. Jacob Kaine and Thomas Chafe were the other scorers for the Outaouais team.

For the Phoenix, Andrew Belchamber and Hugo Primeau made the red light shine with their 2nd goal of the campaign.

Kian Hodgins stopped 28 pucks. He is the one who deserved Gatineau’s 3 victories during this season. The Ottawa native now has a 3-2 record, with a goals- once morest average of 2.59.
