Jordan, Britain stress need to increase aid to Gaza

Jordan – Jordan and Britain stressed, on Tuesday, the need to reach an “immediate” ceasefire in Gaza, and to double humanitarian aid to civilians in the Strip.

This came during a meeting between King Abdullah II and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London, according to a statement by the Jordanian Royal Court.

The statement said that the two sides stressed the “need to reach an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and double humanitarian aid to civilians.”

During a bilateral meeting followed by an expanded one at the British government headquarters, the two parties discussed “bilateral relations, the dangerous developments in the region, and the deteriorating conditions in Gaza,” according to the same statement.

King Abdullah warned of the “danger of the widening circle of conflict in the region.”

He stressed “the importance of Britain’s role in mobilizing the efforts of all parties to reach a ceasefire in the Strip, and to enhance the humanitarian response to stop the catastrophe that the Gazans are experiencing.”

He pointed out that “Jordan will continue to coordinate with Britain to double aid.”

The Jordanian monarch praised the British government’s recent decision to resume its support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), “to enable it to carry out its vital and humanitarian role, in accordance with its international mandate, towards millions of Palestinians in Gaza and the region.”

He also warned of “the acts of violence committed by extremist settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank, and the continued violations of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.”

Since October 7, 2023, Israel, with American support, has been waging a war on Gaza, resulting in more than 129,000 Palestinian deaths and injuries, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing amid massive destruction and deadly famine.

Tel Aviv continues this war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolutions to stop it immediately, and the International Court of Justice orders to end the invasion of the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, take measures to prevent acts of genocide, and improve the dire humanitarian situation in the Strip.
