JORDANIA and the United States (US) discussed efforts to achieve a comprehensive and urgent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Palestine. This was conveyed in a meeting between Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf in Amman.
Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the meeting between the two parties focused on accelerating a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza. “It is necessary to stop the war and the resulting humanitarian disaster and ensure the protection of civilians as well as the delivery of sufficient and sustainable humanitarian aid to the entire Gaza Strip region widely, safely and without obstacles,” said Safadi in X.
Israel has launched deadly military aggression in the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack on October 7 led by Hamas that killed 1,163 people. More than 31,500 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Gaza, and 73,546 others have been injured due to mass destruction and shortages of basic necessities.
The latest Palestinian-Israeli war has forced 85% of Gaza’s population to flee amid a blockade that has paralyzed most food, clean water and medicine. Meanwhile 60% of the infrastructure in the enclave has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.
Israel is accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice. An interim decree in January ordered Tel Aviv to ensure its forces do not commit acts of genocide and guarantee that humanitarian aid is provided to civilians in Gaza. (Anadolu/Z-2)
