“Jonnysiwo” double pack not enough: Mainz messed up 2-0 lead

FSV Mainz 05 experienced a very bitter followingnoon at 1. FC Köln on Saturday. Despite a 2-0 lead, Mainz broke down in the end and finally had to admit defeat to the hosts 2-3. Ironically, Luca Kilian, on loan from the 05ers, scored the winning goal for Cologne.

“Jonnysiwo” double pack is not enough

Mainz was present from the start. The 05ers didn’t allow the hosts any promising opportunities. In return, they struck ice cold themselves following a quarter of an hour. Jonny Burkardt once once more proved his recently won goal threat and scored the lead for FSV. The 21-year-old took a right shot from the edge of the penalty area and finally benefited from the fact that a Cologne player deflected the ball into an untenable path for the FC keeper. As a result, Mainz had more of the game, but just as little as Cologne might put themselves in the limelight.

Shortly following the break, the FSV struck once more ice cold. Karim Onisiwo hit the far corner from a tight angle to make it 2-0 (55′). After that, the Cologne team changed three times. That should pay off immediately. First, Cologne scored the connection through Skhiri immediately following Mainz were 2-0 up (59th). In a heated final phase, the Cologne team then managed to equalize (78′) when the Austrian Ljubicic shot into the left gable from 15 meters. A little later it got even more bitter for the 05ers. Ironically, the loaned Kilian pushed the ball easily over the line from two meters (82nd), following Zentner had previously parried a header.

Mainz came within a hair’s breadth of marking the equaliser. But Ingvartsen didn’t manage to put the ball in the Cologne goal from five meters away. Thus, the FSV awards a victory that was believed to be certain and ranks 10th in the table with 38 points.
