As revealed Motorsport.com during the weekend, Jonathan Rea will indeed leave Kawasaki at the end of the season. Six times Superbike World Champion with the brand, the Northern Irishman is expected at Yamaha, to replace Toprak Razgatliogluthe driver who succeeded him on the list in 2021.
Rea was however officially under contract with Kawasaki for 2024, but the KRT team confirms that he will be released by mutual consent at the end of the current season, his ninth on the handlebars of the Ninja.
Guim Roda, KRT team manager, s’est dit “privileged” to have shared a piece of WorldSBK history with Jonathan Rea, today at the head of the discipline’s records with his six consecutive titles, 119 victories (including 104 with Kawasaki) or 256 podiums (214 with Kawasaki).
“Our task now is to end the 2023 season as best as possible with the tools we have been able to build this year,” adds the team manager. “As always, we will continue to seek improvements and benefits wherever possible. KRT is committed to putting on a great show with Johnny in his final four events on the formidable and impressive Ninja ZX-10RR which he has become. synonymous.”
Thanking Kawasaki for believing in him in 2015, Jonathan Rea said: “I have learned and grown a lot as a person and as a rider since the first day I rode the factory Ninja ZX-10R. Winning six consecutive WorldSBK championships will always, of course, be the highlight. of my journey at Kawasaki, but what I will take with me are also the amazing memories, the life lessons and the laughs.” And to add: “It’s not a goodbye, because you don’t say goodbye to your family. It’s just the end of an incredible chapter.”
