During the off-season, the New York Rangers signed goaltender Jonathan Quick, to be the assistant to the excellent Igor Shesterkin, the undisputed #1 of the team.
Quick, who wasn’t traded by the Kings a few months ago, signed with his childhood team following winning the Stanley Cup in Vegas – despite limited playing time under the colors of the Golden Knights.
Obviously, what he knows is that Quick is no longer as quick than before. He’s slowed down quite a bit and the Rangers got their hands on a guy who can’t be as dominant as he used to be.
And clearly, during training camp, Quick demonstrated that he has slowed down. His .821 save percentage in two games and his 6.00 GAA don’t mean everything because it’s only two games, but…
But it’s proof of what we’ve been seeing for a while: he’s slowed down.
What you need to know is that the Rangers recently announced that goaltender Dylan Garand was recalled from the AHL. And let’s just say that this did not go unnoticed.

Quickly, people wondered if this meant it was the end for the veteran.
As TVA Sports reports, there is currently talk at this level. Nothing has obviously been confirmed, but we can think that the Rangers are considering removing him from the NHL roster.

Today, the New York Rangers did not submit the veteran’s name for waivers. Are we going to end up doing it before his regular season debut in his new uniform?
It’s possible, yes.
At the same time, I can’t believe the Rangers didn’t know they were getting their hands on a late-career veteran. He didn’t play in the 2023 playoffs and there’s a reason.
Cutting him might look bad for the Rangers, who have big ambitions this year. Let’s also remember that if a veteran like Quick is publicly dissatisfied, it won’t be good for the Rangers.
