Jonathan Marchessault chose the right time to play the best hockey of his career.
The Quebecer is in the final year of a six-year, $30 million contract. The Golden Knigts will therefore have to make a decision following this campaign. Marchessault has 38 goals this season, just five short of the franchise record – William Karlsson had 43 goals in the Knights’ inaugural season in 2017-18.
Marchessault’s agent, Pat Brisson, mentioned in an interview with The Associated Press that he has had conversations with Vegas management, but he does not believe the matter will be resolved by the end of the season. If the Knights are unable to come to terms with the 33-year-old veteran, he will be one of the most coveted players on the free agent market which begins July 1.
“It is peaceful to wait. Of course, he would have liked it to be resolved already, added Brisson. He has worn the Knights uniform since their debut. He loves playing for them, he produces for them, he won the Stanley Cup and was the recipient of the Conn-Smythe. »
Brisson, however, did not want to mention what terms Marchessault was asking for, and Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon did not want to reveal them either.
“At this point in the season, we all want to work together to make the playoffs. Discussions regarding player contracts are not things we are going to comment on,” McCrimmon explained.
Vegas is trying to keep the last position giving access to the playoffs in the West. Bruce Cassidy’s men are four points ahead of the St. Louis Blues.
