Creed 3 star Jonathan Majors has been arrested on attempted strangulation charges ,assault and harassment.
NYPD said Majors, who starred alongside Michael B Jordan in the recently released film, was involved in the domestic assault of a 30-year-old woman on Saturday.
“The victim told the police that she was assaulted,” a police spokesman said.
Majors was quickly arrested and charged with criminal slapping the woman, causing a laceration behind her ear, and grabbing her hand and neck, causing bruises.
Meanwhile, the 33-year-old actor’s lawyer denied her client any wrongdoing.
NYPD said they were contacted at around 11:14 a.m. local time following receiving a call from an apartment in the Chelsea borough of Manhattan.
She added that the woman sustained minor injuries to the head and neck, and was taken to hospital.
An NYPD spokesperson told the Associated Press news agency that Majors was released by Saturday night.
In a statement obtained by the BBC, Majors’ lawyer said the actor was “totally innocent” and alleged that the star was the victim of an altercation involving a woman known to him.
“We are quickly gathering evidence and presenting it to the public prosecutor with the expectation that all charges will be dropped immediately,” Priya Chaudhary said.
“This evidence includes video footage from the vehicle in which this incident occurred, testimony from the driver and others who witnessed and heard the incident, and most importantly, two written statements from the woman denying these allegations.”
“All evidence proves that Majors is completely innocent and did not attack her at all.”
Majors’ actress Carrie Gordon said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times that the actor “did nothing wrong.”
“We look forward to clearing his name and making that clear.”
The US military pulled new ads featuring the “Creed 3” star.
“While Mr. Majors is innocent until proven guilty, the wisdom dictates that we withdraw our until the investigation into these allegations is complete,” Laura DiFrancesco, a spokeswoman for the military’s Office of Marketing, said in a statement.
Majors’ arrest comes just weeks following he received an award at the Academy Awards.
Majors’ career took off following his success in “The Last Black Man” in 2019 in San Francisco, before starring in “The Harder, the Fall and”, “Ant-Man” and “The Wasp: Quantumania”.
