The American destroyer USS Rafael Peralta and the Royal Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Ottawa crossed the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday, the US 7th Fleet announced in a statement. This is their third joint transit in the region since June.

Taiwan’s defense ministry said the two warships crossed the Taiwan Strait heading north overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, adding that it had monitored the movement and that the situation was “normal.”

China tracked and monitored the transit and handled the situation in accordance with law and regulations, the People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command said in a statement Thursday.

The U.S. and Canadian navies made a similar crossing in September.

In June, the U.S. Navy released video of what it called a “dangerous interaction” in the Taiwan Strait, in which a Chinese warship passed a U.S. destroyer. China’s Foreign Ministry said the measures taken by its military were entirely reasonable, legitimate, professional and safe.

The American destroyer USS Chung-Hoon and the Canadian frigate Montreal were making a “routine” crossing of the strait in June.
