MADRID, 29 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Japanese authorities have confirmed on Monday the deployment of a warship in the vicinity of South Korea for a series of joint maneuvers in the vicinity of the South Korean island of Jeju.

The exercises, led by the South Korean Navy, will include the presence of seven ships and six aircraft — representing countries such as Australia, Canada, the United States and Singapore, as well as Japan and South Korea.

Thus, the destroyer ‘JS Hamagiri’ has arrived this Monday at the port of Busan, in South Korea, ahead of the start of these maneuvers, called ‘Eastern Endeavor 23’ and will begin this Wednesday, according to information from the Yonhap news agency.

The objective of these countries is to “enhance concerted efforts to prevent the possible proliferation of weapons of mass destruction by North Korea”, as the South Korean authorities have pointed out.

The ship has arrived with the flag of the rising sun, the Japanese military flag, a symbol for many of Japan’s imperialist past, something that might spark controversy in South Korea.
