“This collective momentum constitutes an essential step which has demonstrated its effectiveness: successfully quitting smoking for thirty days in a row increases the chances of definitive cessation by five. Since October, candidates can register using the dedicated website. Stopping smoking represents, for everyone, a major health challenge but also an issue in terms of finances and quality of life: according to OECD models1, No Tobacco Month helps reduce health expenses in particular by avoiding a good number of lower respiratory infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cancers linked to tobacco use. Its effect would also increase employment and work productivity.
With nearly 6 out of 10 daily smokers wanting to quit smoking, Tobacco Free Month is an opportunity to take on this challenge collectively thanks to the support of different stakeholders (health professionals, partners, loved ones, etc.) who help participants stay motivated in their smoking cessation. This year once more, field actions are being deployed to be as close as possible to smokers.
Speakers from POPAM, a medico-social addiction structure, will notably hold a Tobacco Free Month stand at the CSSM Mayotte on Thursday, November 2 from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Friday, November 3 from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. They will welcome the general public (smokers and those around them) and will offer them: – listening, information, guidance; – distribution of tools; – registration with Tabac Info Service; – smoking cessation interview; – delivery of prescription and nicotine replacement treatment.
