In a remarkable achievement last year, the City of Clarence soared to podium status in the prestigious Garage Sale Trail event, celebrating the highest participation rate in Tasmania and securing a commendable third place across all of Australia.
This remarkable Australia-wide pre-loved festival encourages individuals to participate by registering their garage sales over two dedicated weekends, fostering a community-driven effort to significantly reduce the environmental impact associated with the disposal of goods.
In 2023, over 11,600 enthusiastic residents from Clarence actively took part in the event, collectively hosting an impressive total of 278 garage sales throughout the city. Their efforts resulted in an astonishing saving of 125,622 kilograms of waste from ending up in landfill, while simultaneously generating an impressive $102,180 in resale value for the community.
This year, we are excited to collaborate once again with the Garage Sale Trail and several local councils to bring this dynamic and engaging event to our community, demonstrating our commitment to diverting waste from landfill.
The eagerly anticipated dates for the 2024 event are set for November 9 & 10 and November 16 & 17, and registration is currently open for those eager to participate!
Whether you are keen to declutter, on the lookout for irresistible bargains, or hoping to uncover unique treasures, the Garage Sale Trail offers the perfect opportunity to engage in sustainable shopping while transforming your unwanted items into cash.
How Does It Work
Anyone can easily participate, from homeowners and community groups to schools and local businesses. You can register your own personal garage sale, or join forces and collaborate with a group for a more impactful event!
- Step 1: Register your garage sale for free on the Clarence City Council page Garage Sale Trail
- Step 2: Promote your sale! Upon registration, you will receive a listing on the national sales map, which is viewed by over 200,000 eager bargain hunters, along with a downloadable promotional pack and invaluable tips and resources from our garage sale experts.
Why Participate?
Decluttering can pay off significantly—participants in the Garage Sale Trail make an average of $457, proving that selling pre-loved items is both environmentally sustainable and financially rewarding.
In 2023 alone, more than 419,000 Australians participated by either selling or shopping at over 14,000 garage sales nationwide. Collectively, they extended the life of a remarkable 4.8 million kilograms of items, successfully keeping them out of landfills.
Since its inception, the Garage Sale Trail has effectively diverted over 10 million items from landfills, conserving countless resources, while also empowering communities to raise funds for various charitable causes. This initiative stands as a powerful testament to the positive change that can be achieved when individuals and communities unite for a common purpose. For these reasons, partnering with this initiative was an obvious choice for us as we strive to promote more sustainable practices within our community.
By joining forces with the Garage Sale Trail, we strive to make this year’s event more expansive and impactful than ever before, reaffirming our commitment to sustainability, waste reduction, and strengthening community connections.
