Coral reefs with their bright colors, but also their global disappearance are the central theme of sisters Margaret and Christine Wertheim, who live in Los Angeles (USA). In order to draw attention to the dying of coral reefs, the science writers and artists created the project “Crochet Coral Reef” in 2005, which was already shown at the Venice Biennale and has received worldwide attention.

In dialogue with the natural science collection in the Schlossmuseum Linz, it can now also be seen in Linz. Textile artist Elisabeth Röthler from Eichgraben recently wanted to give her niece something for her birthday. She wished her aunt to take part in this project. “I took a look at the project and was thrilled,” says Elisabeth Röthler. She immediately started to crochet and encouraged some artisans from Atelier Bella Vista to do the same.

In the meantime, some women from Eichgraben are already involved in the creation of the “Austrian Satellite Reef” and enrich it with their own creations. This Satellite Reef is the latest re-production and adaptation of the Wertheims’ collaborative practice, whose “satellite reefs” created in 50 cities and countries now form a global reef network of wool. Everyone can take part and become part of the exhibition – whether beginner or crocheter pro, whether with old wool remnants, recycled plastic bands or even metal cords – color, shape and material of the crocheted corals are freely selectable, own ideas are welcome. The “Austrian Satellite Reef” grows with every individual contribution. The artists Margaret and Christine Wertheim are particularly pleased with corals, which take up the color combinations black and gold, blue and white and red and white.

All contributors are mentioned in the exhibition and in the catalogue. Info at:
