“Join Our Cultural Cooperative: Volunteer with Espace Noir in St-Imier”

2023-05-09 12:22:00

Espace Noir needs volunteers. The self-managed cultural cooperative of St-Imier is short of staff and makes it known in the bulletin, its cultural brochure. Even if a closure is by far not on the agenda, it has had to adapt its cultural offer while waiting to find more people. Currently 7 people strong, there should ideally be 15 to ensure normal operation. Michel Nemitz, one of Espace Noir’s cooperators, explains that the first consequence of this lack is the tavern, which had to shorten its opening hours.

Another point is to be in agreement with the values of Espace Noir. In Le Bulletin, the self-managed cultural cooperative writes that: “We are aware that commitment to our cooperative requires certain requirements due to our libertarian-inspired values”. All the same, for Michel Nemitz, the most important thing is that there is no leader: “Everyone takes part in the decisions. To give a little spirit, there is this sentence: “All bosses, so that there is no boss”. We are therefore all egalitarian, but also responsible for the proper functioning ”.

A special offer

Michel Nemitz likes to remind us: “It’s an extraordinary instrument: bringing together in the same place a bistro, a bookstore, an exhibition gallery or even a cinema”.

If Espace Noir does not succeed in strengthening its teams, the cultural center exposes itself to consequences both in the short term, with readjustments at the level of the cultural offer, and in the long term, with a risk of exhaustion of troops.
