London: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson vowed Thursday not to “give up” Hong Kong, in a statement he made to mark the 25th anniversary of the return of the former British colony to China.

“We will not abandon Hong Kong,” the British Prime Minister said in a video recording posted on Twitter. “25 years ago, we made a covenant with the region and its people, and we intend to abide by it and do everything in our power to make China respect its commitments to restore the administration of Hong Kong to its people.”
Johnson considered that Beijing “for some time” has not been abiding by its commitments, and said that this matter constitutes “a threat to the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong people and to the pursuit of progress and prosperity.”
Since Beijing regained control following pro-democracy demonstrations in the city in 2019, London confirms that it has received more than 120,000 applications for residency from British passport holders residing abroad.

In a statement, British Foreign Secretary Lise Truss denounced the “continuous erosion of civil and political rights”, particularly since the National Security Act was imposed on June 30, 2020.
“The authorities have stifled dissent, criminalized opponents and expelled anyone who might confront the authorities with the truth,” Terrace said.
