Following pressure from more than 50 cabinet members and senior officials to resign, Prime Minister Boris Johnson of Britain’s ruling Conservative Party finally stated on Thursday (July 7) that he would resign as party leader but will remain as prime minister until a successor is selected.
Speaking publicly at the Prime Minister’s Office, he said Conservative MPs had made it clear that a new leader was needed. He said the election of a new leader should begin now, with a timetable for the process to be announced next week.
He also said he would give his full support to whoever ends up being the new prime minister.
The British Prime Minister is the leader of the ruling party, so Johnson’s resignation as the leader of the party today means that he will eventually leave the post of Prime Minister. But there are calls from within the Conservative Party that he should resign as prime minister at the same time.
In the past six months, Johnson has experienced the impact of the “partygate” scandal during the new crown epidemic and had to face a vote of no confidence in the party. Although he was lucky enough to win a vote of no confidence, the latest exposure of sexual harassment of Conservative MPs has become the “last straw” that crushed his political integrity.
Johnson admitted he had been informed of allegations of sexual harassment by Conservative MP Chris Pincher in 2019, but appointed him as deputy whip and apologised for it.
That sparked a string of resignations from top cabinet ministers in the ruling Conservative government, including Chancellor Rishi Sunak (Rishi Sunak), the prime minister’s right-hand man, and Sajid Javid, the health minister.
BBC Chinese related reports:
Health Secretary Javid said: “Between loyalty and integrity, I chose integrity.
Dominic Cummings, who once served as Johnson’s adviser, said publicly that the Conservatives should not let Johnson stay as prime minister, “should let him go immediately, he will only cause carnage to stay, and he is still delaying time, trying to stay. .”
Members of the 1992 committee, made up of Conservative backbenchers, called for the prime minister to be replaced immediately.
British voters are concerned regarding whether the ruling Conservative Party will put more pressure on Johnson to “resign” immediately in the interest of the country and the party.
The “forced palace” drama surrounding Prime Minister Johnson’s resignation has been staged for quite some time. The plot of Prime Minister Johnson’s performance in British politics has now reached its final climax, and we only need to wait and see.
