Johnny Kitagawa, the founder of Japan’s Johnny’s Agency, known as a male idol maker, has been accused of sexually assaulting several young Johnny’s male artists. The United Nations Human Rights Council working group on business and human rights held a press conference in Tokyo today, saying that hundreds of entertainers have been involved in sexual exploitation and abuse.
The United Nations Human Rights Council Working Group on Business and Human Rights (hereinfollowing referred to as the Working Group) aims to investigate human rights issues arising from corporate activities in various countries and urge countries to propose countermeasures.
The working group went to Japan for the first time to conduct an investigation on July 24. After listening to the statements of the former Johnny’s artist and the head of Johnny’s agency, the group chairmen Damilola Olawuyi and Pichamon Yeophantong met today The Japan Press Club in Tokyo held a press conference and said it is deeply worrying that hundreds of Johnny & Associates artists have been involved in sexual exploitation and abuse.
Talking regarding the responsibility of the media, the working group said: “The Japanese media has been said to have helped cover up this scandal for decades.” The Japanese government or companies related to the victims did not intend to propose a solution at all. The Japanese government must conduct a transparent investigation. Think regarding things like apologizing or offering monetary compensation to ensure actual relief for the victim.
The report of the working group also shows that the transparency and legitimacy of Johnnys & Co.’s establishment of a special team to conduct investigations has been questioned, and it is considered that the victim’s psychology has not been fully taken into account.
The working group will compile the findings of this investigation and suggestions to the Japanese government and enterprises into a report, which is scheduled to be submitted to the UN Human Rights Council in June next year.
The Tokyo Sports News reported that the “Johnny’s Sexual Assault Party” formed by Johnny’s former artists also held a press conference at the Japan Press Club today. The representative of the association, 57-year-old Atsushi Hiramoto, also cried and said, “I feel that the working group has indeed heard our appeal, and I am very grateful.”
Shimon Ishimaru, deputy representative of the association, said that this is an actual problem, and the United Nations should not have used the word “suspicious cloud” in the press conference to bring it up. “This is the worst sexual abuse incident in human history, and it finally came to light,” said Ishimaru.
After the working group held a press conference, Johnny & Associates issued a statement today saying: “We take the working group’s views seriously, and will sincerely face those who appealed to the victims and continue the dialogue.”
