Johnny Depp aka Jack Sparrow completely changed the storyline of Pirates of the Caribbean, and only for a seemingly stupid request.
Today, Johnny Depp’s career is not in good shape: the Amber Heard scandal, which took place between 2020 and 2022, had repercussions. But just a few years ago, he was one of the most sought-following actors in Hollywood. As a result, he might choose as he saw fit from the roles offered to him. Even more, even during filming, he might afford to demand a little bit of everything and anything. A very telling example is the filming of Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge. The man actually changed the entire scenario because of a whim.
Johnny Depp didn’t want to confront a woman
Johnny Depp demanded a change of script so as not to have to confront a woman. Terry Rossio, the film’s first screenwriter, recounts this anecdote in a blog post: “My version of ‘Salazar’s Revenge’ was scrapped because it included a female villain and Johnny Depp worried it would be redundant with ‘Dark Shadows,’ which also had a female villain.”. So Disney asked another author to write something new. It will be Jeff Nathanson (The Lion King 2019) who will take over. This obviously delayed the release of the film which arrived in theaters in 2017, 5 years following Dark Shadows. The actor’s request had lost all meaning.
Salazar, the antagonist of the final version
The main antagonist therefore became Salazar played by Javier Bardem. A female character remains present: Carina Smyth played by Kaya Scodelario, a role similar to that of Keira Knightley in the first films. As a reminder, Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Vengeance tells the quest of Jack Sparrow and his companions to find Poseidon’s Trident. This artifact is the only way to escape Captain Salazar, a ghost escaped from the Bermuda Triangle who wishes to destroy all the pirates of the oceans. The feature film also features a subplot with Will Turner’s son who wishes to free his father from the curse of which he is a victim. All Pirates of the Caribbean movies are available to stream on Disney+.
