Holy Wrongs.
It seems that these two words have come out of my mouth quite often when talking regarding John Tortorella… And my speech is not regarding to change. Especially not following hearing this completely hilarious anecdote regarding former Blue Jackets coach and his former goaltender in Columbus, Sergei Bobrovsky.
The story, which is narrated by Ryan Dzingel, takes place just following the trade deadline in 2019. At that time, Dzingel and Matt Duchene had just been traded to the Blue Jackets and when they arrived in the locker room, for the very first time…
They were a little surprised to see Tortorella yelling at his players. Where it gets funny, though… It’s when we hear Dzingel say that Torts threw a water bottle towards Bobrovsky, who didn’t catch it…
And Tortorella then told him that he knew he wasn’t going to catch it because the goalie was having trouble stopping pucks on the ice at that particular point in the season.

His little crisis in the locker room sent a clear message to the Blue Jackets players… Who qualified (barely) for the playoffs and then swept the powerful Tampa Bay Lightning in four short games.
It’s unorthodox, we agree… But if it works, it works.

I wonder how much talk it would cause if events like this happened in Montreal. One thing is certain, it’s not Martin St-Louis who’s going to start doing stuff like that. Eh eh.
According to what we hear, John Tortorella has a new, calmer approach… And I can’t wait to see if it will last given that the Flyers should experience (another) fairly difficult season.
