John Deere Electric Powertrain, a division of farm and industrial equipment maker John Deere, will invest $69.6 million to build a battery and fast charger factory near Winston-Salem. This new facility will serve as the North American headquarters for John Deere Electric Powertrain LLC, a joint venture between Deere and Kreisel Electric of Austria. The 115,000-square-foot plant will be located in Kernersville, near an existing Deere excavator plant.
The factory’s main attention will be focused on the production of batteries and chargers for heavy-duty off-road electric vehicles. The construction of this plant will create 50 new jobs, including positions such as assemblers, material handlers, packers and quality inspectors. State authorities have offered a $100,000 grant to support the project, and the company might receive additional incentives totaling up to $1.32 million from Forsyth County.
John Deere’s investment in this production capacity expansion is driven by growing demand for electrical solutions. Pierre Guyot, Senior Vice President of John Deere Power Systems and President of Kreisel Electric, says this strategic investment will solidify his position as an international leader in battery technology. Guyot stresses the importance of developing a strong charging ecosystem and battery portfolio to support the long-term adoption of electrification in various applications within the off-road equipment market.
This project is part of the recent increase in EV-related investments in the Carolinas. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper expressed his enthusiasm for the investment, noting the state’s leadership in clean manufacturing, innovation and transportation, and the resulting job creation. The company’s annual payroll is estimated to be $3.3 million.
John Deere plans to start construction in the fall of this year and expects production to start in 2025.
