The arrest of a young Venezuelan, only 15 years old, who is accused of participating in a robbery and shooting in the middle of Times Square in New York, where a Brazilian tourist was shot and wounded, among other crimes, generated a strong debate about the relationship between illegal immigration and increased crime.

José Alejandro RF was formalized this Wednesday for two crimes of attempted murder – since he shot twice at the police – assault, attempted assault and criminal possession of weapons, during an assault that occurred on Thursday afternoon at the JD store sporting goods store, between Broadway and 42nd Street, in the heart of the city.

The teenager was accompanied by two other young people, with whom he stole products from the store and then left without paying for them. It was at those moments that a guard tried to stop them, causing José Alejandro to pull out a .40 caliber weapon and shoot at the employee, wounding a 38-year-old Brazilian tourist who was inside the premises.

As the group fled, the young man shot again, this time at the police. His two companions were arrested shortly after, but he was only apprehended this Tuesday.

The situation, however, is far from punctual. According to a press conference held by New York Patrol Chief John Chell, the authority has noted an increasing trend in crime along with increased illegal immigration from Venezuela.

“We don’t care who you are or where you come from.”

“We have some groups of Venezuelan immigrants, and I want to emphasize that they are groups, not all Venezuelans, that are affecting crime in our city, and it is increasing now much more than when they began to arrive here,” the officer stated.

“We talked about last week and how it has impacted crime trends. We have seen an increase in robberies, assaults and pickpockets, both in Times Square and on the subway. We have also seen groups going to stores, such as Macy’s or Kings Plaza. They enter and take other people’s property. So yes, we are seeing a trend,” Chell said.
