Legendary programmer and game designer John Carmack, creator Doom and co-founder id Softwareleft the company Meta*. How informs edition Insider and a number of other media, Carmack announced his decision at the company’s internal forum.

Carmack became the first technical director Oculus in 2013, and a year after that, Zuckerberg’s company bought the studio. And last year, the name of the brand, which has already become world famous, was changed to Meta* Quest.

The virtual reality consulting CTO has previously criticized the company’s approach to AR and VR and its metaverse strategy. Carmack acknowledged that the developers managed to create something “very similar to what you need”, referring to Quest 2. But everything depends on the low efficiency of the studio and the all-consuming bureaucracy in the company.

The programmer compared the Meta* to a GPU that uses only 5% of its capabilities. In the fall of 2022, he reported that the studio was working on a VR headset that would cost $250 and weigh just 250 grams. Instead, the company announced the Quest Pro for $1,500 and weighs 722 grams.

Carmack admits that his high position could help get things off the ground. But instead, he had to spend every effort to prevent another “stupidity” of the leadership from doing harm. So he chose to leave the fruitless struggle and focus on his own startup.

Meta* is recognized as an extremist organization in Russia
