FORMER Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) spokesperson Johan Budi Sapto Pribowo said that strengthening the KPK requires strong political will or determination from the head of government.
“So I have said it. KPK, you choose a clean leader, even if the angels are as brave as the angels, it will be useless if the President as Head of State, as Head of Government, does not have the political will, does not have the desire to eradicate corruption,” said Johan Budi at the Ministry of State Secretariat, Tuesday (17/9) afternoon.
He admitted that he was happy when he heard the statement of President-elect Prabowo Subianto who was committed to eradicating corruption, in which Prabowo said that even if corruptors ran anywhere, even to Antarctica, they would be pursued.
“At least that’s what President Prabowo conveyed later, now he’s not the President yet. Later he will lead, in my opinion the one who leads the highest commander in the eradication of corruption is also the President. The President has a Chief of Police, has an Attorney General, who can then order the Chief of Police and the Attorney General to do that, that’s what I conveyed to the Selection Committee,” said Johan Budi.
This is homework for the KPK to improve its perception in the eyes of the public. “The public perception of the KPK is bad, even throughout my time at the KPK, the KPK has never been under the police, under the prosecutor’s office, under the DPR even. Now, the public perception of the KPK is because of several things, the change of Law Number 30 of 2002, to Law 19 of 2019. That affects its derivatives in many things, yes ASN, code of ethics and so on.”
He also saw the current conditions as very difficult to fix the KPK. He emphasized the ego-sectoral coordination and loyalty direction.
“Because I heard directly what happened from the KPK leadership during the meeting. If you guys listen to Commission III, they complained, yes, about the ego-sectoral coordination, it doesn’t work, then also about the loyalty of investigators,” he said. (J-2)
