She would never have imagined such a diagnosis. In the United States, a jogger suffering from a small irritation between her toes discovered to her horror that it was a rare form of cancer. It all started in 2015. Then 40 years old, Amy Jardon felt an itch between her quartus and her left quintus. Far from worrying, the passionate runner in her forties continued her daily jogs, but a small pimple the size of a pinhead appeared between her toes. I said to myself: hey, that’s interesting“, recalls Amy in the columns of TODAY.

Perplexed, the jogger decided to consult a dermatologist, who prescribed a biopsy. It was then that the diagnosis fell: the little pinhead pimple was acral lentiginous melanoma, a rare form of cancer linked to skin irritation or chafing.I was shockedsays Amy. I was diagnosed in January 2015. My mother had just succumbed to cancer on December 12. My sister had been diagnosed six months earlier with another form of cancer.”

Since her operation, she has successfully completed two half-marathons

Never mind, Amy was able to show incredible courage. After having the cancerous part of her skin removed, she slowly started running once more. “I sat on my couch for a month. (…) Afterwards, I was able to get up for 10 minutes without it hurting me, then for half an hour.” Since her surgery, Amy has run two half marathons. She honors one control visit per year and is now very attentive to the reactions of her skin. Sometimes it scratches me in other places, it makes me very nervous“, she confides.

In the United States, approximately 100,000 cases of melanoma are recorded each year, including only 3,000 to 5,000 cases of acral lentiginous melanoma.
