A heated debate has broken out in Italy regarding the coexistence of bears and humans.
According to the will of the Trentino provincial government, the problem bear JJ4 in northern Italy should finally be shot – but not immediately. After her fatal attack on a jogger in Trentino at the beginning of April, Regional President Maurizio Fugatti issued a decree on Thursday once more ordering the bear to be shot down, as the province announced on Friday.
With the current decree, however, the killing is suspended until May 11, when a hearing on the fate of the bear takes place before the administrative court.
“Reasonable to kill the animal”
Shortly following the incident, Fugatti ordered the killing of JJ4. However, the administrative court of Trento had suspended the shooting order following complaints and lawsuits from animal protection associations.
If a decision is made in May, the animal should be killed “as soon as possible,” the decree says. As a precautionary measure for public safety, it is “reasonable to kill the animal rather than accept even the slightest risk that it will come into contact with people once more”.
Heated debate in Italy
JJ4, also known as Gaia and the sister of the problem bear Bruno, who was killed in Bavaria in 2006, attacked and killed a 26-year-old jogger in early April. The 17-year-old bear has been in a closed-off game enclosure since she was caught in mid-April.
The Trento court hearing on the fate of JJ4 is now eagerly awaited. In Italy, meanwhile, a heated and emotional debate regarding the coexistence of bears and humans has flared up.
