Monday, during the NBA regular season match won by the Philadelphia Sixers over the San Antonio Spurs (133-123), Victor Wembanyama, the French prodigy of the Texan franchise, scored 33 points (10/19 on the shoot including 2/ 5 to three points). But Wembanyama’s performance was eclipsed by that of Joel Embiid, the pivot of the 76ers, MVP of the previous season. The latter actually scored 70 points (24/41 shooting, including 1/2 three-pointers). He also grabbed 18 rebounds. Embiid became the record holder for points scored in a single game by a Sixers player, surpassing the legendary Wilt Chamberlain, who scored 68 in 1967.
During his fabulous career, Chamberlain passed the 60-point mark three times with the Sixers. He still holds the record for points scored in a single NBA game (100 in 1962 under the colors of the Philadelphia Warriors, now the Golden State Warriors). Another 76ers legend, Allen Iverson scored 60 points during a game in February 2005.
San Antonio reacted at the end of the match
Last in the Western Conference with only eight victories in 43 matches played, the San Antonio Spurs did not let themselves be fooled by the Philadelphia Sixers, who were ranked third in the East. The Texans trailed 110-91 with ten minutes left in the game.
But they were only nine points behind 2’37” from the buzzer (127-118). Philadelphia then gave a final push, carried in particular by Embiid, to regain a 15-point lead (133-118) and move towards victory.
Tyrese Maxey (18 pts) and Tobias Harris (14) also contributed to the victory for the 76ers. The latter are now on a series of six consecutive successes. Nicolas Batum scored five points, grabbed eight rebounds, delivered six assists and signed three interceptions. In the ranks of San Antonio, in addition to Wembanyama’s performance, Devin Vassell scored 22 points.
