The news was announced Monday morning. According to Sportsnet network hockey expert Elliotte Friedman, the organization did not want to lose MacFarland to opposing teams and did not allow him to be interviewed by them.
The 52-year-old New Yorker was hired by the Avs to act as an assistant to the GM in May 2015. So he helped the club rise to Stanley Cup champion status by helping oversee player development important like Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog.
For his part, Sakic has just won the Jim-Gregory trophy, awarded to the DG par excellence in the National Hockey League. Colorado clinched its first championship since 2000-01 following finishing second overall in the regular season.
