Joe Locke, one of the leading actors in the Netflix series “Heartstopper”, came out publicly gay in an interview with “Teen Vogue”. Although various articles published regarding the artist since the start of his career in 2022 referred to him as ‘queer’, this is the first time he has defined his sexuality and explained the reason for his previous silence.

In the aforementioned publication, Locke highlighted how, in fact, he never labeled his sexuality in any previous interview, but that people “assumed” and “wrote” regarding his sexual orientation.
“I have never corrected anyone because I have not felt the need to. But I have never specifically declared my sexuality,” said the 19-year-old artist.
In “Teen Vogue,” where Locke posed with his “Heartstopper” co-star Kit Connor, Locke said he can’t remember the exact moment he found out he was gay, “because, at nine years old, I was already very aware of the way to go, long before he might register that he liked someone romantically.

“I will marry a woman and have children because that is what I am supposed to do”, thought the young man at that age. “But for the record: I’ve been openly gay since I was regarding 12 years old,” Locke said.

In the aforementioned publication, Joe Locke also says that he has felt “guilt” for how his decisions have affected his family.
“It is a strange guilt that sometimes I feel that, by association, their lives are affected by the elections in my life,” he said in “Teen Vogue”, where he said that his mother has had to create alternative accounts on social networks before the number of messages from strangers who write to him or try to identify his location due to the fame that Joe Locke has gained with “Hearstopper”.
The series has also attracted ‘stalkers’ to his grandmother.
“It’s a mutual thing. I need to learn my limits and people need to learn their limits. Most of the attention comes from a really good place, and I hope to always appreciate that,” said the artist.
