32 % : percentage of American adults who approve of Joe Biden’s performance in the White House, according to a CNN/SSRS poll conducted from June 13 to 17 in a country where the unemployment rate is at 3.7%, where inflation slowed sharply last month and where gasoline prices are far from the historic peak of June 2022.
In an article posted a few hours before the publication of this survey, the columnist of the Washington Post Perry Bacon estimated that Biden being as unpopular as Donald Trump at this point in his presidency is not just bad for Democrats but also bad for democracy. “The president is not perfect. But he has hired capable advisers, successfully managed crises such as the risk of debt default, enacted laws that garner public assent, struck deals with the opposing party, made smart decisions on of foreign policy and acted with dignity and elegance,” he wrote. And Bacon concludes his article with these words: “Biden was the type of president I thought Americans wanted. But voters aren’t really rewarding him for it. It’s disappointing. A nation that sees Biden and Trump as similarly flawed politicians is going to end up with more Trump-like leaders who are cruel and corrupt — and who don’t know how to govern either. Of course, you can dispute this analysis.
