The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minex) of Guatemala reports that on June 17, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, received the Guatemalan ambassador Hugo Eduardo Beteta in the Oval Office of the White House to deliver his Credentials for formalize your accreditation as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.
Ambassador Beteta expressed “the high interest of continue to strengthen the bonds of friendship which have been maintained for more than 175 years between both nations” during the ceremony, according to information from the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry.
“Boosting trade and economic tiesbut, above all, to ensure and promote full respect for the rights of Guatemalans living in the United States,” he added.
Minex announced on April 4 that Hugo Beteta was designated as the next Ambassador of Guatemala to the United States.

The Foreign Ministry reported that Beteta had a “strategic participation” in the official tour of the United States by President Bernardo Arévalo.
Who is Hugo Beteta?
Ambassador Beteta has experience in the academic sector and public administration.
His previous experience includes roles in international organizations that give him a good understanding of bilateral relations between Guatemala and the United States.
He graduated from Rafael Landívar University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
In addition, he holds a master’s degree in Civil Engineering and Administration, as well as one of Regional Urban Planning from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, United States.

He also completed a PhD in Development Economics and Urban Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and earned a certificate in Macroeconomic Management from Harvard University.
In the workplace he served as Director of the subregional headquarters in Mexico of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) from 2009 to 2023.
He was Secretary General of the Inter-American Development Bank between 2007 and 2009.
In 2007, the World Bank recognized Hugo Beteta as one of the Ten Reformers of the Year and in 2008 he received the Order of Isabel la Católica from Spain.

Beteta was also a fellow of the Fulbright Commission and of the Aga Kahn, MIT-Voorhees and MacArthur foundations.
In Guatemala, he was head of the Ministry of Public Finance (Minfin) between 2006 and 2007 during the government of Oscar Berger Perdomo.
He also worked as Secretary General of Planning and Programming of the Presidency (Segeplan).
Beteta was Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administration from Rafael Landívar University.
