Joe Biden urges strengthening of eastern NATO member states

On day two of his visit, the US President met the heads of nine NATO countries from Bulgaria to Estonia. Some, however, found he had said “nothing”.

Warsaw. “Mister Biden, send F-16s to Ukraine!” This huge banner of Ukrainian refugees between the Hotel Marriott, where Joe Biden lived, and the Palace of Culture, Warsaw’s landmark from the days of the communist dictatorship, was intended to soften the US President. Yesterday, on his second day in Poland, he refused to be swayed into making public concessions that he would soon be able to deliver aircraft to the Ukraine.

In Kiev, on the other hand, where Biden stopped by on Monday, Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba toned in an interview that the F-16 would be received. Even when it came to the demand for modern tanks, the initial answer was “no,” he said.

In Warsaw on Wednesday, Biden invoked the fight for freedom and Article 5 of the NATO Charter, the alliance’s article of assistance, which should actually be a matter of course.
