Joe Biden resigned at the Democratic National Convention

– I love my job, but I love my country more, said Biden when he gave an emotional speech to the national convention in Chicago on Monday evening local time.

Biden has passed the baton to Vice President Kamala Harris, who is now the Democratic presidential candidate. In the speech, he rejected speculation that he was pressured to do so.

“All this talk about me being angry at all the people who said I should resign, that’s not true,” said Biden, who announced his resignation less than a month ago.

Harris spoke

At the end of the hour-long speech, Biden received a hug from Harris.

– I promise that I will be the best volunteer for the election campaign of Harris and Walz, said Biden.

Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance on stage earlier in the evening during the first day of the national meeting. She thanked Biden.

– Joe, we thank you for your historic leadership, your lifetime of service to the nation and for all that you continue to do. We are eternally grateful to you,” Harris said.

“We love Joe”

Biden had to wait several minutes before the applause subsided when he was about to start his national convention address.

– America, I love you, he said.

“We love Joe”, it echoed across the room, where party members had been handed out posters with this written on them.

Biden was introduced by his daughter Ashley, and his wife Jill also addressed the national meeting.

– My father used to say that the family is the beginning, the middle and the end. I love you all. And America, I love you, said the outgoing president.

Attack Trump

During the speech, Biden spent a lot of time listing everything he has achieved as president, including when it comes to the economy and healthcare.

He also believes that he has healed “America’s soul” after the time with Donald Trump as president.

Among other things, Trump was reviewed because the murder rate in the United States increased by 30 percent during his presidency.

– Crime is now falling faster than at any time in history. Violent crime has fallen to its lowest level in over 50 years. And crime will continue to fall when we put a prosecutor in the Oval Office instead of a convicted felon, Biden said, referring to Harris’ previous job.

Hillary Clinton has the faith

The transition to Kamala Harris has breathed new life into the Democrats’ election campaign.

When former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton also addressed the national meeting on Monday, she said that Harris has a great opportunity to “break the highest glass ceiling” by becoming America’s first female president.

– Together we make cracks in the highest, hardest glass ceiling. On the other side of that glass ceiling, Kamala Harris is being sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. When a barrier is broken by one of us, it opens for all of us, said Clinton, who was the party’s presidential candidate in 2016 and lost to Donald Trump.
