Israel announced this Saturday, September 28, the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an airstrike on the southern suburbs of Beirut. This attack targeted Hezbollah headquarters, where Nasrallah had been a major player for decades.

The Lebanese movement confirmed his death, sparking international reactions. US President Joe Biden welcomed the operation, calling it a “measure of justice” for victims of Hezbollah’s actions, including American, Israeli and Lebanese civilians.

Following this event, European authorities advised airlines to avoid the airspaces of Lebanon and Israel due to increased security risks. Nasrallah’s death could exacerbate regional tensions and lead to an escalation of confrontations between Israel and Hezbollah, an organization classified as terrorist by several Western countries.

Since becoming leader of Hezbollah in 1992, Nasrallah has consolidated the group’s influence as a military and political actor in Lebanon, playing a crucial role in conflicts with Israel. His disappearance leaves a void within the organization, which could further destabilize the region, already marked by decades of conflict and rivalry. Observers fear an intensification of violence, while Hezbollah has vowed to avenge the death of its emblematic leader, promising reprisals against Israel.
