Szijjártó in Beijing

The Foreign Trade Minister held intensive negotiations in China on Tuesday. The program included a visit to Great Wall Motors, the company that is said to be planning a factory near Pécs.

Péter Szijjártó estimated the ongoing Chinese corporate projects at a total value of 6,000 billion forints (more than 15 billion euros). These should not only create around 25,000 jobs, but also bring the most modern technologies to Hungary. The fact that China’s economy is growing dynamically again is further good news, because alongside Germany, the performance of the Chinese economy is now the most important for Hungary’s prospects. The minister explained this mainly by the fact that Hungary has become the top destination for Chinese investments in Europe. The bilateral trade volume exceeded USD 10 billion for the first time in 2023. Now Hungarian companies are also looking for opportunities in the huge Chinese market with increasing success. An MVM subsidiary will supply cooling systems for power plants.

Best practices studied

When it comes to the transition to electromobility, Chinese companies have long been the absolute market leaders in the world. In line with this, the Foreign Trade Minister visited the headquarters of Great Wall Motors (GWM) in Baoding on Tuesday afternoon. So far, the Orbán government has remained silent about all speculation in the local media that GWM wants to build a factory (for electric cars?) near the southern Hungarian city of Pécs. Government-affiliated media were even ordered to remove relevant articles from the Internet.

The sixth city

From the summer, another direct flight connection will be launched between Budapest and China: Xi’an is the capital of the Shanxi Sheng Province and the sixth major city in China to be directly connected to the Hungarian capital. Most recently, China Southern announced the start of flights to Guangzhou.
