Hong Kong: Dreaming of a job in a foreign country? So what if we leave it to the ‘financial hub’ of Hong Kong? From construction sector to aviation sector, there are many vacancies waiting for you. Know more.
The Hong Kong government has announced plans to attract more foreign workers to areas facing severe labor shortages, including setting quotas for tens of thousands of foreign workers. Explaining the plan, Labor and Welfare Secretary Chris Sun said that workers are behind the country’s economic progress.
It is reported that many sectors, including the service industry, are experiencing a severe labor shortage following the relaxation of the Covid-19 restrictions. The city’s immigration policies and local labor shortages are blamed for this. It is in this situation that the country is thinking of relaxing the immigration policies to bring more foreigners into the country.
Currently, the goal is to employ 12,000 foreign workers in the construction sector alone, said Development Affairs Secretary Bernadette Lynn. Around 6,300 people will also be employed in the aviation sector. Transport and Logistics Secretary Lam Tsai-hung said the city is also facing a severe shortage of top airport staff.
At the beginning of this year, there were only 32 percent fewer workers at the airport than before Covid. Officials say that there were very few workers in areas such as passenger check-in, baggage handling and catering services.
Officials expect to start receiving applications for jobs in the construction and transportation sectors from July. Officials have clarified that the process can be completed within two months. Appointments to other sectors will be completed in a phased manner.
The Hong Kong economy recorded rapid growth this financial year. Economists expect Hong Kong’s gross domestic product to grow 4.6 percent this year, according to the latest Bloomberg survey.
