More than 20,000 visitors are expected until Sunday at the FADOQ Show, presented at the ExpoCité Fairgrounds Center. Among the new features, an area intended for job seekers aged 50 and over with more than 500 positions to fill.
Economic reasons are encouraging more and more retirees to return to the job market or to stay there longer for experienced workers, notes Alain Raymond, general director of the Employment Preparation Workshop (APE), which is involved in the creation of this area.
“Financial needs are greater with the increase in the cost of living,” added Mr. Raymond.

A trend which has become more pronounced, according to him, in the last year. The number of employed people in Quebec aged 55 and over is estimated at 926,000. In comparison, the number of young people in employment (15-29 years) is around one million, according to 2021 data.
500 positions to fill
“It’s true that there are some who return to the job market to make ends meet, but others also do it to enrich their social life,” said Michel Beaumont, general director of FADOQ.
It was a bit of both that encouraged Jacqueline Théberge from Quebec to visit the employment zone.
“I’m looking for a part-time job. I can work in human resources management and customer service. I have a lot of experience in management,” she confided.
Although she has been retired for several years, Ms. Théberge wants to return to the job market.
“In the current situation where everything costs more, we all need a little more money. It’s also a question of being in contact with others,” she added.
Also met there, Thérèse Jobin from Quebec was curious to see the jobs available.
“I’m retired and I’m looking for a part-time job because I’m tired of staying at home! I like being active. I have always worked in my life. There are some very interesting things,” she shared.
“We believe that seniors returning to the job market are part of the solution to the labor shortage,” added Mr. Beaumont.
FADOQ continues to make representations to governments to reduce the tax burden on retirees who wish to continue working. Some gains have been made in the past, but further improvements remain to be made.
