Todd Phillips “Joker” caused a lot of excitement. Some consider the Joaquin Phoenix drama a masterpiece, others don’t. One thing he’s sure of is that “Joker” is intense. But Phoenix’s next film might be even more blatant.
Director Todd Phillips’ “Joker” hit theaters in 2019 and split audiences into two camps. While some critics didn’t find the drama particularly well done (including us, as can be read in the review), there are certainly voices that call the film a masterpiece. What everyone can probably agree on is that lead actor Joaquin Phoenix (who is currently in cinemas in Beau Is Afraid) performed quite exceptionally. As in almost all of his roles, Phoenix simply gives his all as Arthur Fleck.
In the US, “Joker” has been given an R rating, which is an age rating that makes it clear that the film is primarily aimed at adults. It suggests that such a film might be quite explicit in terms of language, depiction of violence and sexuality and was therefore definitely not made for children. However, Phoenix’ next role will be even more crass…
Joaquin Phoenix’s New Movie Gets NC-17 Rating!
The film festival is currently taking place in Cannes and the who’s who of the international film scene is gathering on the French coast. Among them was ‘Carol’ director Todd Haynes, who presented his new drama ‘May December’ (and pretty wowed!). In an interview with IndieWire he also chatted regarding his new projects on the red carpet. Including an untitled film he’s working on with Joaquin Phoenix – and which he already knows is going to be violent.
Hayne’s new film is the brainchild of Joaquin Phoenix himself, and the two co-wrote the script with screenwriter Jon Raymond. According to Haynes, the drama will be regarding a gay romance set in 1930s Los Angeles. He is certain: “This will be an NC-17 film”. He also explains that this rating was mainly due to Phoenix, who convinced Haynes to push boundaries.
Successor to Porn Rating X: What Does “NC-17” Mean?
An NC-17 rating in the US means that under-18s have absolutely no access to the film. If you are 17 or younger, you can still see the film if you are 17 or younger if you have an R rating if you are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian; if you are NC-17, there is no such exception. So it’s clearly an adult production.
Violence, sex, abnormal behavior, substance abuse, and other content that is just absolutely not suitable for children play a role in this rating. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the film has to be really pornographic – although it used to be like that.
Too hard for an FSK 18: New horror board from cult director is now appearing completely unabridged for home cinema
The rating category was introduced primarily for porn films. At that time it was still called X-Rating and was even controlled by the porn industry. When it became an official age rating from the MPAA in 1990, it was given the new designation NC-17 to shed its pornographic image as well.
However, it is still the highest age rating that can be assigned in the USA – and it very rarely is. Because many cinemas refuse to play films with an NC-17 rating. It’s rarely used in foreign films that have sex scenes that are too explicit for the US. It made headlines last year when “Blonde” became the first Netflix film to receive an NC-17 rating.
Exactly why Phoenix’s new film will be crasser than “Joker” (and all Phoenix films before it) cannot yet be said exactly. NC-17 is usually an indication of graphic sex scenes. When we can get the work in the cinemas is also not yet certain.
No other Joaquin Phoenix film is coming for the time being
Actually, the still untitled project with Haynes should not be Phoenix’s next film. Because he was supposed to be shooting alongside Rooney Mara (“Carol”) Pawel Pawlikowski’s (“Ida”) new film “The Island” from now on. How Deadline however, nothing more is reported regarding it for the time being. The reason for this is the threat of further strikes in Hollywood. In addition to the currently striking screenwriters, there is also a possible strike by the actors’ union in the room. Due to the danger that production would have to be stopped, every insurance company refused to cover them once morest such a failure, which now means the end of the project.
“The Island” was supposed to tell the true story of an American couple who want to move to a deserted island and live there self-sufficiently. But the plans threaten to fail when a noblewoman from Europe discovers the island for herself and wants to build a luxury hotel there. Phoenix and Mara were supposed to play the emigrant couple.
If you want to see Phoenix in action on the big screen, you should check out “Beau Is Afraid” view. The film by “Midsommar” director Ari Aster is currently in cinemas. On the other hand, we have to wait more than a year for the “Joker” sequel “Folie à Deux”. The sequel hits theaters on October 3, 2024.
