When the “Joker” with Joaquin Phoenix started in the cinemas, its plot was discussed controversially. But his next film will probably be a lot more brutal than Joker already was.

Despite an R rating in the USA, “Joker” was one of the most successful cinema films of the film year in 2019. However, despite the fact that the age rating was already high, it was discussed controversially. Now the next project by Joaquin Phoenix is already on the horizon, which might go a step further.

The Cannes Film Festival is currently taking place in France, where various films for the coming months are already being presented. This is also the case for director Todd Haynes’ latest project entitled “May December”, who in the same breath also spoke regarding his subsequent film.

The film does not yet have a title, but Haynes developed the idea together with actor Joaquin Phoenix. According to the director, the project is a drama that follows a homosexual romance set in 1930s Los Angeles.

Sounds like a very interesting film on its own, but Haynes also revealed that the project will be an NC-17 film. This is regarding an even harder release than the well-known R rating. While 17-year-olds are still allowed to go to the cinema with their parents with an R rating, this is not permitted with NC-17 films.

Details on why the film might receive such a release are not yet available. In the short description, at least the very explicit depiction of sexual acts would be conceivable. Joaquin Phoenix can currently be seen in the cinemas in the film “Beau Is Afraid”, before “Joker 2: Folie à Deux” awaits us in cinemas in October 2024.
