This Wednesday, Thursday and Friday the students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of La Plata (UNLP) will elect the authorities of the Student Center, the five directors, the superior and the representative before the University Federation of La Plata (FULP), as well as the remaining 16 academic units.
In 2019, the center and the four directors won the majority by the Remediar group, seconded by the front between Vientos de Abajo (Patria Grande) and UNITE (PCR) “Somos una nueva Faculty” (Lista 20), which remained with the counselor for the minority.
It should be noted that the contest takes place within the framework of a year where the dean or dean is elected in the academic unit and as this medium might know, the current highest authority would depend largely on the vote of the students to be re-elected since it would not have the representatives of the graduates and the head of the practical work to reach the necessary number of motions.
List 20 will be presented once more this year and Info White On Black spoke with Joaquín García, the first candidate for board member, member of Viento de Abajo and assistant professor of Biology at the Faculty.
“We are still on the front lines because we understand that UNITE is one of the groups that does not bow its head and when the authorities do not respond they do not remain silent and have participated in the different mobilizations,” the leader stressed regarding the continuity of the alliance with the PCR. “With unity it is easier to be able to defend the rights that cost so much to conquer.” In relation to the campaign proposals, García indicated that a priority issue is attendance and the need for more practices.
“Virtuality was a successful tool to be able to continue with academic activities in a context where that might not be guaranteed in any other way, but when schools, bars, cinemas, parties and restaurants began to open, we, at that point , we still did not have a protocol for the return to presence, “said the candidate for counselor.
“Today we are having attendance once a week, which means that many students are paying the entire month of rent to study four times in person, not only the life of the students is debated but the quality of the professionals”, said García .
“I am finishing my final practices and I was lucky enough to be able to study semiology and internal medicine where we saw patients in hospitals and we might take blood pressure, see x-rays, among other things,” added the student reference.
“Currently, students see the first patient in the final practices and that affects the lives of people who tomorrow will trust those professionals who have training through a computer or a telephone,” Garcia explained.
“Faced with the non-response of the students, the student center decided to bow its head and approve the resolution on full presence that had very little presence,” denounced the referent of Winds from Below on the actions of the student government.
“The central debate goes through the quality of the professional that is being trained today. Now we have a fairly mediocre face-to-face with some first-year chairs that have it, while others are considering continuing in virtuality, “said García, adding that in his case he is an assistant in the Biology chair and in that area “it was suggested that the authorities did not want” attendance.
“The problem is the budget and the lack of classrooms, and for that we have to plan a program among all the cloisters to build more infrastructure. The library has space for one hundred people and we have a Faculty of more than 33 thousand students. What we are proposing is that we are many students and no one is thinking regarding how to guarantee academic excellence and presence for all”, assured the List 20 candidate.
On the other hand, García also referred to the lack of communication on the part of the Faculty and the inconveniences that this causes. “If someone has to request an extension in a subject, the Faculty takes more than a week to respond and that means that it is not resolved and the student ends up abandoning the subject and even the career”, specified the student referent and added that currently in the Student Department “there are five people to serve more than 30,000 students, it is unfathomable”.
Finally, Garcia referred to the mistreatment of students by several teachers. “There are teachers who believe that making you eat shit is part of the training of professionals and the only thing that ends up happening is that the student reproduces the same logic, that’s why we are proposing a protocol in situations of abuse,” the student concluded.
