Three athletes from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) delegation to the Paris Olympic Games have returned to Kinshasa, accompanied by some members of the technical staff and officials of the Congolese Olympic Committee (COC). The three athletes are: judoka Arnold Kisoka, swimmer Divine Miansadi and boxer Brigitte Mbabi.
As for boxer Marcelat Sakobi, according to concordant sources, she remained in France to participate in additional training sessions. However, swimmer Aristote Impelenga Ndombe and sprinter Dominique Mulumba Lasconi have not given any sign of life. They still have valid visas, which allow them to legally stay in France after the Games, according to the laws in force.
As a reminder, the DRC took part in this 33rd Olympiad, and the Congolese athletes did their best given the preparation carried out. Apart from the two boxers, the other four athletes received invitations, which shows that there is still a lot of work to be done to deserve a qualification on the ground.
“An Olympic medal is not prepared in six months or a year. It takes a whole quadrennial, and after that, we can consider a first participation of athletes recruited at the age of 15, 16 or 17. If this participation is not satisfactory, the second will certainly produce results. It is important to understand that the antechambers of medals are the training centers of high-level athletes. You cannot win a gold medal by staying in your comfort zone and training in an ordinary way, while others, considered high-level athletes, follow intensive programs,” Alain Badiashile Kayatshi, the secretary general of the Congolese Olympic Committee (COC), told ACTUALITE.CD.
Since its first participation in 1968, the DRC has always been chasing an Olympic medal, without success. Unfortunately, these failures seem to be repeated, and the lessons of previous participations have still not been learned. It is time to become aware of the reality of Congolese sport and to make the necessary decisions.
