It is not only the controversies that have been triggered that will remain attached to the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. It will probably also remain the event that, in France, will hold a record audience.
Taking into account the replay, this ceremony actually exceeds in audience the final of the Blues against Argentina in 2022, broadcast on TF1. And which, until this day, was the biggest audience in history for a French channel.
More than a million people in seven days
According to figures released this Saturday, the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Games, which lasted nearly 4 hours in the rain, has attracted, to date and taking into account the replay, more than 24.43 million viewers. Thanks to the replay system, this is 1.2 million more people than those who were counted on the very day of the ceremony, on July 26.
Some highlights of this ceremony, including the lighting of the cauldron and the hymn to love performed from the Eiffel Tower by singer Céline Dion, even brought together between 29 and 29.5 million people. And the performance, criticized in advance by Aya Nakamura with the Republican Guard, is said to have even exceeded 30 million, as this performance was shared so much on social networks.
Better than the France-Argentina final of 2022
Still to this day, the event has accumulated an audience share (PDA) of 83.1% and even peaks at 87.2% on women responsible for purchases under 50 years old. And it is ahead of the first step in the final of the 2022 Men’s Football World Cup, marked by the defeat of the Blues against Argentina and on penalties. France’s defeat was followed by 24.08 million supporters in front of TF 1. The first French channel then accumulated 81% of PDA.
And the media success of the Games does not seem to be stopping, to the great delight of France Télévision, the official free-to-air broadcaster of the Games. In the first five days of the Games alone, its broadcasts were watched (for at least one minute) by 55 million French people, more than during the entire Tokyo Olympics.
