Jimmy Carter’s Final Journey Begins in Plains, Georgia
Plains, Georgia, bid farewell too former President Jimmy Carter on what woudl have been his 99th birthday. His death on December 29th at 100 years old marked the end of a remarkable life dedicated to public service and humanitarian work. A motorcade carrying his flag-draped coffin began its journey from the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, accompanied by former Secret Service agents who served as pallbearers. The procession made its way through Plains, Carter’s beloved hometown, where families lined the streets to pay their respects. many carried flowers or wore pins bearing Carter’s image. “We want to pay our respects,” said 12-year-old Will Porter Shelbrock, who made the trip from Gainesville, Florida with his grandmother, Susan Cone. “He was ahead of his time on what he tried to do and tried to accomplish.” Shelbrock’s admiration echoed the sentiment of many who remember Carter for his humanitarian efforts, including building homes and advocating for peace. He was also lauded for his environmental activism, notably his decision to install solar panels on the White House roof. On Tuesday, he will be transported to Washington to lie in state at the US capitol. A state funeral will be held at Washington National Cathedral on Thursday at 10 am,followed by a private funeral at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains.
