Jimmy Carter (99) wants to “hold on” and vote for Harris

“I’m trying to hold out to vote for Kamala Harris,” the Democrat said, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper on Saturday. According to the report, his son Chip Carter had asked him a few days ago whether he hoped to be able to celebrate his 100th birthday on October 1.

The 99-year-old then replied that he wanted to live long enough to be able to vote for the likely Democratic candidate, his grandson Jason Carter told the newspaper from the US state of Georgia. According to the newspaper, people there can vote on the successor to the Democratic US President Joe Biden from October 15.

“Livelier and interested in politics”

His grandfather, who has been receiving palliative care at home since February 2023, has recently become “livelier and interested in politics and the war in the Gaza Strip,” Jason Carter told the paper. The former peanut farmer and later Nobel Peace Prize winner, who served from 1977 to 1981, is the oldest living ex-president of the United States.

Biden, 81, recently withdrew his candidacy for a second term under public pressure and proposed his 59-year-old Vice President Harris as his candidate. She is expected to run against former Republican President Donald Trump.
