Jim Hines, Olympic 100 meter champion at the 1968 Mexico Games and who later had a career as a receiver in the NFL, has died. He was 76 years old.
USA Track and Field announced that Hines died Saturday. They did not give any cause of death for him.
Born in Arkansas, Hones grew up in Oakland, California before competing for the University of Texas South, where he began to find success.
Hones won the 100 meters at the 1969 Mexico Olympics setting a new world record of 9.95 seconds. He also helped the United States win gold in the 4×100 relay.
Hines’ world record in the 100 meters stood for 15 years before Calvin Smith surpassed it. The current record belongs to Jamaican Usain Bolt with a time of 9.58 seconds that he set at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.
Following his track career, Hines became a player for the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs. He had two catches for 23 yards with Miami in 1969, as well as a 22-yard kick.
After his retirement, Hines worked at a community center in Houston, according to World Athletics. He was inducted into the Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1979.
