Captain Ibrahim Traoré, head of the military junta, brought to power by a coup on October 2, 2022, destroyed one of his last assets once morest the jihadists who continue to gain ground (they occupy nearly 40% of the territory ) in Burkina Faso. After a new attack which left 44 dead last week in the north of the country, on the border with Niger, the authorities announced on Thursday the general mobilization to “give the State all the necessary means” to try to counter the jihadist advance.
This decision opens up the possibility of requisitioning Burkinabés, goods and services in the face of this threat. She also makesapplicable throughout the territory certain defensive measures. It entails a state of emergency in the parts of the territory concerned”, according to a reliable source.
The leader of a junta who justified his seizure of power (by overthrowing another military regime which had orchestrated the fall of the civil authorities nine months earlier) by the need to put an end to the advance of these rebels, does not has more choice of weapons. Ibrahim Traoré indeed reproached his predecessor, Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, for having been incapable of obtaining concrete results in the field of security. Six months later, following having also stigmatized the errors of the French military response, Captain Traoré is confronted with the same reality and the same limits on the ground. With this “general mobilization”, he is destroying one of his last assets and trying to unite the people behind this initiative which, without a coordinated regional response, will not be able to achieve its goal.
