The Jewish Museum Vienna is addressing the Hamas attack on Israel with an artistic work: A series of pictures by the Ukrainian-Israeli artist Zoya Cherkassky-Nnadi, in which she artistically processes the attack by the terrorist organization Hamas, can now be seen in the freely accessible shop window in the Dorotheergasse Museum .

“On the one hand, she uses art to underline the universal significance of the attack, which goes far beyond Israel, but on the other hand, she also refers to the specific events of October 7th,” the museum said in a statement on Tuesday. “It’s not regarding an analysis, it’s not regarding what has happened in Gaza since then, but it’s regarding this particular tragedy on October 7th,” said the artist, who began painting the pictures shortly following the attack began and all of them are dated October 7th.

The works are embedded in an “intellectual and art historical framework”: Under the impression of the attack on Kibbutz Be’eri, Cherkassky-Nnadi drew parallels to the events behind Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica”. The artist, born in Kiev in 1976, emigrated to Israel with her family in 1991 shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union. “With her series of pictures, Cherkassky-Nnadi not only shows the suffering of the people in Israel. As a critic of the current Israeli government, she also expresses her disappointment with the international art scene’s reaction to the attacks,” says the Jewish Museum.
