Just days after appearing at an inauguration event honoring Robert F. Kennedy Jr., singer-songwriter jewel took to Instagram to offer an apology to her fans amidst a storm of criticism. The 50-year-old vocal artist addressed the controversy directly, expressing remorse for any pain she may have caused.
“I am so sorry that I caused pain,” Jewel stated in the heartfelt video message. “Especially in my LGBTQIA+ community because you guys are treasures. You make the world a better place. You’ve made my life a better place, and I will not stop fighting.”
Jewel’s participation in the event had sparked controversy due to Kennedy Jr.’s controversial views, causing some fans to feel let down. The singer acknowledged this disappointment, saying, “It pains me, and I am so sorry. Some of my longtime fans feel that I let them down. I want to be a ray of light in this world. I try hard to be a ray of light in your lives, and I know that in times of darkness, we must grow light. And so I will wake up again tomorrow and try again, and I will count on each of you to do the same.”
Jewel explained her decision to participate, emphasizing her long-standing commitment to mental health advocacy. She believes that inaction is not an option when it comes to vulnerable populations. “If I want until I agree 100% wiht the people that might be willing to help me, I’d never get off the bench,” she said. “I don’t think that’s how activism works, waiting until everything’s perfect enough to participate. It’s actually… because things are so imperfect that we have to find ways to engage to participate. And we have to act now. We cannot wait another four years.”
While acknowledging that she doesn’t agree with all of Kennedy Jr.’s political stances, Jewel underlined her desire to influence policies that prioritize mental health. “If I can help shape policy, make sure mental health is in the conversation … If I can help put resources or mental health tools into the hands of the most vulnerable who need it, I’m going to try and I’m going to fight,” she asserted.
Reflecting on the controversy, Jewel admitted that her initial statement was overly simplistic.
“And I understand that my words were overly simplistic,” she continued. “Half of our country feels hope right now, and I honor that. And half of our country feels disenfranchised and scared and vulnerable, and that is unacceptable,” she concluded.

Singer-songwriter Jewel recently faced a wave of criticism following her appearance at an event honoring Robert F. Kennedy jr.She subsequently issued a heartfelt apology to her fans on Instagram, acknowledging the pain she caused, especially within the LGBTQIA+ community. Archyde News Editor Michael Hanson sat down with Jewel to discuss her actions, her commitment to mental health advocacy, and the challenges of navigating complex social issues.
A Difficult Decision
“Michael, my initial reaction to the criticisms was to withdraw, to stay silenced. But I realized that staying quiet wasn’t an option. My silence would have been interpreted as agreement, and that’s not who I am,” Jewel explains, her voice calm but resolute. “it pains me that some of my longtime fans felt let down. I want to be a beacon of hope and positivity, and I know that in times of darkness, we must strive to be a greater light. I strive daily to do that, but I also acknowledge that I am human. I make mistakes, and I learn from them.”
Mental Health Advocacy and Obligation
Jewel underscores her unwavering commitment to mental health advocacy as a driving force behind her decision to attend the event. “Sometimes, the perfect solution doesn’t exist. I believe that if I waited until I agreed 100% with everyone involved, I’d never be able to take action. Activism isn’t about waiting for perfect conditions; it’s about engaging with imperfect realities and fighting for change. Mental health is a critical issue, and I can’t afford to wait any longer.”
Finding Common Ground Amidst Disagreement
When asked about her decision to engage with Kennedy jr., despite his controversial views on other matters, Jewel states, “I don’t agree with all of his political stances. Though,I believe that it’s essential to find common ground. If I can use my platform to advocate for policies that prioritize mental health, to ensure that vital resources reach those who need them moast, then I will continue to do so, even if it means engaging with individuals who hold different viewpoints.”
Learning and Evolving
Reflecting on the controversy, Jewel admits, “I recognize that my initial statement was overly simplistic. We’re living in a time of deep division, where half the country feels hopeful and the other half feels marginalized. Both perspectives are valid, and both need to be acknowledged. I strive to understand all sides, to listen with empathy, and to grow from every experience, even the painful ones.
A Call for Unity and Compassion
“I believe that we can do better, that we can be better. Let’s focus on finding common ground, on building bridges rather of walls. let’s show compassion for each other, even when we disagree.Let’s remember that we are all human beings deserving of dignity and respect.
