CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Zach Wilson has shown he can move New York’s offense as a backup quarterback, but the Jets kicked off the Aaron Rodgers era with a 21-16 loss to the Cleveland Browns Thursday night in the Hall of Fame -Game.
It was a battle between rookies and reserves as both teams gave their starters a break in the opening game.
Browns rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson brought the Browns close to the Jets with two touchdowns in the second half. Rookie Thompson-Robinson threw a 22-yard TD pass to Austin Watkins Jr. with 9 minutes left and gave Cleveland the lead.
Zach Wilson started as quarterback for the Jets
New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson opened the game with a 57-yard shot for wide receiver Malik Taylor. Jets coach Robert Saleh was pleased with Wilson’s performance.
“I thought he did a really good job,” Saleh said at half-time. “I think he did a really good job for us in the first game.”
Greg Zuerlein hit field goals from 54, 44 and 53 yards and Israel Abanikanda had a 10-yard touchdown rush for the Jets.
Aaron Rodgers only viewers for the time being
Rodgers was a high profile viewer. The four-time MVP watched from the sidelines, wearing black Jets gear and a headset, giving him the look of an assistant coach rather than a star quarterback. Rodgers toured the Hall of Fame on Wednesday and got an up-close look at the place where he will one day be memorialized. Before that, though, he’s supposed to help bring New York’s franchise back to fame.
Preseason: Aaron Rodgers will probably not play
The 39-year-old isn’t expected to play this preseason — he hasn’t since 2018 — and he said earlier this week that the upcoming joint practice sessions against Tampa Bay and Carolina will help him prepare for the season-opener game on March 11 September against Buffalo will help.
